This year we are offering our most bullet proof and time tested species for wall builders who want fast reliable wall coverage that will last for decades with minimal care. Our Living Retaining Wall Plants are small live starter plants, grown in 50 mm dia. paper Ellepots for easy transplant into your Varden Block planting pockets. Living Retaining Wall plugs are faster to grow-in than seed and easier to plant than 4” garden center pots. No plastic pots to dispose of! Shipped right to your door by UPS makes it so easy! Live plant quantities are limited, so when they are gone, they are gone till next season.
Designed and grown to be paired with our lightweight, plantable Varden™ block system but also works for planting beds, sidewalk edges and no-mow yard areas as well. Living Retaining Wall Plants root-in fast in our soil-filled blocks, giving roots space to spread out and grow strong. Varden block walls are almost 95% soil in the facing, so the plants dont even know they are in a wall. Bullet Proof Species – Time Tested Wall Coverage Performance

Sedum kamtschaticum
Sedum kamtschaticum is our most utilized plant for our plantable retaining walls. The reason is its ability to thrive in full sun environments as well as shady locations. kamchatikum will completly cover the wall face in the first season. Not many plants can do that. This variety will die back to the ground in winter and will come back early in Spring from the ground and through dormant top growth. Kamtschaticum is very hardy, drought tolerant and requires only minimal fertilization over the years. We have many walls surviving 30+ years and counting.

Phedimus takesimensis
Sedum – Phedimus takesimensis is our second most utilized plant for our plantable retaining walls. The reason is its ability to thrive in full sun environments, while staying green all winter in northern climates. Phedimus does not do well in shade and needs sun in winter to survive. Phedimus will completely cover the wall face in the first season. Not many plants can do that. This variety of Sedum is very hardy, drought tolerant and requires only minimal fertilization over the years. We have many walls surviving 30+ years and counting.

Baltic Ivy
Baltic Ivy is our favorite plant for complete wall coverage and and year-round foliage in shady locations. Provided in the same 32 count flats as the two Sedum varieties for easy shipping and planting. This Ivy thrives in shady living wall locations and will survive in sunnier spots, but it will struggle, so plant wisely. Morning sun is tolerated but do not plant where it will take the afternoon setting sun. Consider planting in the shaded sections of your Varden retaining wall and using one of the Sedums in sunnier sections. Its OK to mix and match.
